A simple thing like turning out lights can help birds navigate our environment and protect them from unnecessary harm.
We are working on an initiative to encourage governments, building owners, and homeowners to turn out non-essential lights in the Richmond area.
Especially between the hours of 10 p.m. and dawn from: April 15- May 31 and August 15 - November 15. Even better to keep lights out from dusk to dawn all year long.
A simple thing like turning out lights can help birds navigate our environment and protect them from unnecessary harm.
You can look forward to working towards long-term modifications you can make to help our community become more bird-friendly including:
· Put necessary lighting on timers or use motion sensors
· Make sure external lighting is down shielded by adapting current lighting or installing appropriate updates as replacement is needed
· Installing bird-safe glass and/or decals
In addition to helping birds, these efforts have the additional benefits of reducing energy usage and saving money. Communities across the country from Atlanta to Chicago to Portland, Oregon have seen the benefits and implemented Lights Out and adopted bird-friendly practices.
