The Big Sit

Annual October Bird Count

Richmond Audubon Society’s (RAS) eighth year participating in The Big Sit!

Sunday, October 13, 2024

CLICK HERE TO READ A SUMMARY OF THE DAY!

This year we counted at a new location as part of a goal to visit new locations around the RVA area each year.

NEW RVA LOCATION:

Tuckahoe Creek Park (click for map)

Sunday, October 13, 2024, 7am – 7pm

Join Richmond Audubon Society as we attempt to tally as many species as possible from a stationary location while we SIT! The Big Sit will see teams across the country "competing" as they attempt to record as many species as they can from a fixed location in one day. This is RAS' 8th year participating and last year we saw a modest total of 45 species downtown, overlooking the river. Our record is 64 species at Bryan Park in 2022. This year the count will be stationed at Tuckahoe Creek Park in Henrico's West End.

Anyone interested in helping with the count is welcome, just bring a chair, snacks, and your optics and hang out for a while. Counters will be out there from sunrise to sunset. For more information contact:

Ellison Orcutt at Mr.Ellyo@gmail.com.

The Sit will be closer to the south end of the park and parking is along Old Coach Ln (37.62061, -77.65023, do not block driveways). There is NO bathroom at the location and space is tight on the boardwalk, but we're all friends!
